About The Villanova Equity Society:

The Villanova Equity Society (VES) is a student club organized under the direction of the Institute for Research in Advanced Financial Technology (IRAFT).  The purpose of the club is to provide real-world experience by actively managing portfolios of equity securities.  Through the club, students will gain a better understanding of equity investing and the capital markets.

The Villanova Equity Society currently controls two distinct student managed funds, the Whipkey Large-Cap Fund and the Haley Group Mid-Cap Fund.  Both funds are domestic, long-only equity funds that invest only in socially responsible investments.

Both funds use top-down fundamental investment analysis across five sectors: technology, consumer, energy, healthcare, and financials.  Sectors are led by captains and typically include 8-10 analysts.  A socially responsible screen is used to select securities for inclusion in the fund.  Technical indicators are also taken into account to determine entry and exit strategies.  Each portfolio is then quantitatively optimized utilizing modern portfolio theory.  All final investment decisions are subject to approval by the Villanova’s Student Managed Fund’s cross-fund investment committee.

Purpose:

The purpose of the new member training seminar is to expose candidates to the basics of financial accounting, fundamental analysis, relative and intrinsic valuation, technical analysis, and portfolio theory, as well as the resources available in the Applied Finance Lab and the databases of the Bartley Virtual Library.  The program focuses on the practical applications of finance and accounting topics in regard to equity analysis and valuation.  Candidates will gain a basic understanding of equity analysis and the capital markets, be able to prepare a thorough stock analysis, and be prepared to be productive members of the VES if accepted.  The program is designed for students at all levels to benefit from the topics covered.  Students are encouraged to ask questions and actively participate in the seminar.

Assessment:

Prospective new members will be assessed for admission to the Society based on the following criteria:

1)      Attendance- Attendance is crucial in order to learn the considerable amount of material which will be presented.  Please email the club secretary with a valid excuse anytime you will not be able to attend.

2)      360 Peer Review- Candidates will rate their peers’ team skills based on a small group stock trading competition (explained below).

3)      Stock Analysis- Each candidate will complete an individual stock analysis (explained below).

360 Peer Review

As an opportunity for students to utilize the skills they learn during the course of the seminar they will participate in a mock trading game utilizing the Virtual Stock Exchange (http://vse.marketwatch.com/Game/Homepage.aspx).  Students will be divided into 5 member teams and be given $100,000 to invest in equities only.  No short selling or ETFs are allowed: the portfolio is meant to simulate the Equity Society portfolio which operates under these same restrictions.

At the end of the program, students will be required to rate the skills of their team members base on a number of criteria.

Stock Analysis:

The most important component of a student’s evaluation for admission to the Equity Society is the individual stock analysis.  Candidates should select a US listed stock (no penny stocks) and perform a thorough analysis of the company and the stock, concluding in a BUY, SELL or HOLD recommendation using this stock report template.
